If you own your own business and depend on your work tools, then this is directly relevant to you…

Have you ever thought about what would happen if you were unable to do your job? If you were prevented from going to work through no fault of your own?

There are so many perks of being self-employed; you are your own boss, you choose your own hours and it is ultimately down to you how your spread your workload. However, there are downsides as well. Especially when something happens which jeopardises your income, such as having your tools stolen. But SmartWater® can help…

An "epidemic" that is destroying livelihoods.

Are you aware that a tool theft occurs every seven minutes in the UK? New, worrying figures have revealed that UK tool theft has rocketed by over 30% in the last twelve months and police figures suggests it has increased by nearly two thirds in two years.

Although it is one of those situations we are ignorant of until it happens to us – it is imperative that anyone who keeps their tools in a vehicle is aware they could become a victim of this tool theft epidemic!

The consequence of losing your tools could be you are left unable to earn a living until the claim is settled and you can replace your tools. More likely you will have to replace them and be left out of pocket until the claim is settled. Using the SmartWater Tool & Equipment Security Pack will deter criminals in the first place and the mobile app will help you settle your claim sooner. Definitely worth thinking about!

There’s plenty of advice around to try and prevent your tools and equipment from being stolen:

  1. Store your tools safely – however this means transporting all your tools from your van into your home at the end of every evening – but who really wants to do this after a long day’s work? Even then they might not be covered. Your household insurance may not cover business related tools and equipment stored in your home. With SmartWater Tools In Transit Insurance, keep your vehicle locked with your tools out of sight, and you will be covered provided you are parked on your drive, a well-lit road or a hotel car park.
  2. Choose a secure parking location – advice states that you should park your vehicle in a busy, well-lit and built up area with CCTV in operation. But what happens when you or your street doesn’t have CCTV? Perhaps you live in a quiet cul-de-sac away from busy areas…again, if the vehicle is locked, and the road is well lit you should be OK.

Unfortunately, this may not be possible…So we have combined SmartWater® with a Tools In Transit insurance policy underwritten by RSA.

The policy wording requires you to park in a secure compound or building; your drive, a well-lit street or car park, or in a car park with 24-hour guarding. Good sense would suggest this is the best course of action anyway. The tools and equipment are then covered up to the value of the policy – please take care when deciding on cover that you have the right level – this should be the full purchase cost for everything, within reason.

The policy covers for replacement on an "as is" basis – in other words this is not "new for old". If you have to make a claim our app will calculate the probable settlement figure for you so if you need to replace them without waiting for the claim to settle you can at least have an idea of how much you will have to spend.

The full policy wording is available on our website for you to review before you buy.
